How To Start A Blog in 2024: The Best Way to do it

Here are the five important steps that every aspiring blogger needs to take to kickstart their blogging career:

Step 1: Pick the perfect niche

In the realm of blogging, selecting the perfect niche holds utmost significance. The niche you opt for can either pave the way for success or hinder the profitability of your blogging venture.

Even if you possess exceptional writing or marketing skills, choosing the wrong niche can make monetizing your efforts nearly impossible.

Discovering the right niche can be a time-consuming endeavor, potentially demanding more time than any other steps covered in this post.

The initial step is to select a fundamental market, with options such as wealth, health, and relationships.

How To Start A Blog in 2024

I know what you’re thinking:

“Are those the only options?”

For now, yes.

But remember that each core market has a virtually infinite pool of submarkets, niches, and micro niches underneath them.

What are submarkets?

A submarket is a smaller segment with a core market.

For example, if your core market is relationships, then “dating” can be your submarket.

How To Start A Blog in 2024 And Make Money Online! 57

What are niches?

Within submarkets lie thousands – if not millions – of niches.

Let’s say you went ahead and picked the dating submarket. Your niche could be “dating for men.”

What are Niches

By now, your blogging niche should begin to take shape. Unfortunately, your niche is still too broad, especially for a newbie starting from scratch.

This takes us to the next part of your niche hunt.

What are micro niches?

Micro niches, also known as sub-niches, represent even smaller segments within a broader niche.

The better attuned you are to the specific needs of your industry, the more straightforward it becomes to identify a micro niche.

For instance, the “dating for men” can be narrowed down to the following micro niches:

  • Dating tips for shy men
  • Dating tips for men in college
  • Relationship advice for men in their 50s
  • Dating advice for Indian men
What are Micro Niches

If you’re still uncertain about how to determine the ideal niche for yourself, resist the temptation to rush through the selection process.

To guide you through this decision-making journey, here’s a brief overview of the best tips I’ve come across over the years:

Build a list

Before you came to this aide, there’s a decent opportunity you as of now have two or three specialty thoughts as a main priority.

Obviously, you likely thought of a couple more after we examined submarkets, specialties, and miniature specialties.

What I believe that you should do is fabricate a rundown of the potential specialty thoughts you have in your mind. A calculation sheet device like Google Sheets would be ideally suited for this.

Niche Ideas Spreadsheet

Why use a spreadsheet tool?

Since we an unmistakable and inside and out check out at the elements that influence the benefit of a specialty.

Trust me – the more you read, the more this will seem OK.

How about we get rolling.

Think about the monetization opportunities

Next to the list of niche ideas, create a new column called “monetization.”

Monetization Column

The objective of this column is quite straightforward.

You must assess the broader perspective and identify strategies to ensure the sustainability of your blog within each niche.

For instance, in the context of “freelance writing in India,” consider incorporating the following monetization ideas:

  • Affiliate marketing (Grammarly, Canva, etc.)
  • Online freelance writing courses
  • Paid freelance job board listings
  • Sponsored job ads from companies
  • Sponsored posts from freelancing websites

Feel free to integrate these monetization opportunities into your list.

Monetization Ideas

Tip: To insert a new line within a single cell in Google Sheets, press ‘Alt’ + ‘Enter’ for Windows users. If you use macOS, press ‘control’ + ‘return’ instead.

After this step, your list should now look like this:

Niche Ideas with Monetization List

This makes it easier for you to determine the niches with the most lucrative and accessible monetization opportunities for you.

Look at the pros and cons of each niche

The purpose of this column is straightforward: evaluate the bigger picture and pinpoint strategies for making your blog sustainable within each niche.

As an illustration, for “freelance writing in India,” contemplate including the following monetization ideas:

  • Affiliate marketing (Grammarly, Canva, etc.)
  • Online freelance writing courses
  • Paid freelance job board listings
  • Sponsored job ads from companies
  • Sponsored posts from freelancing websites

Feel free to incorporate these monetization opportunities into your list.

The objective of this column is clear: assess the broader perspective and identify strategies to make your blog sustainable within each niche.

For example, when focusing on “freelance writing in India,” consider incorporating these monetization ideas:

  • Affiliate marketing (Grammarly, Canva, etc.)
  • Online freelance writing courses
  • Paid freelance job board listings
  • Sponsored job ads from companies
  • Sponsored posts from freelancing websites

Feel free to integrate these monetization opportunities into your list.

In any of these scenarios, the most logical course of action is to explore another related sub-niche.

There are numerous ways to do this, such as examining Google’s search suggestions and delving into related keywords. Alternatively, you can leverage your industry knowledge to identify related niches.

Beyond discovering entirely new niche ideas, this approach also helps you assess the scalability potential of your blog.

While your blog may currently focus on freelance writing in India, down the line, you could expand into topics like content marketing and solo blogging in India.

For a more in-depth guide, I recommend checking out the “Exploring micro niches” section in this post.

Start picking the winner

Let’s say here are your top three favorite niche ideas:

  • Freelance writing
  • Dating for shy men
  • Weight loss through HIIT
Top Niche Ideas

The next step is to go over each item’s pros, cons, monetization opportunities, and related niches.

With all this information laid on the table, it’s only a matter of time before you pick one out.

If you’re still having trouble finding the perfect blog niche, I have one last piece of advice for you.

Make it about you

Blogging demands your consistent commitment to bringing your “A” game – not just today, but every day until you achieve your goals.

The key to sustaining motivation over the long term is to view your website as a digital extension of yourself. Consequently, it should revolve around topics that genuinely matter to you.

While it’s not uncommon to encounter digital entrepreneurs managing multiple blogs across various niches for income generation, their primary “money” site typically reflects their genuine interests.

Here’s my advice: seek out your Ikigai.

This Japanese principle translates to “a reason for being alive” and lies at the intersection of your passion, mission, profession, and vocation.

What is Ikigai

Get it?

Now, look at your list of top niche ideas and verify which can be considered your Ikigai.

You’ll know you found it if:

  • You’re really good at it
  • You can get paid for it
  • There’s demand in that niche
  • You’re happy with your choice
Picking the Perfect Niche

If you pick your niche using your Ikigai, it’s much easier to be motivated and driven in the long run.

Everything – from mastering new skills and writing insightful content – sounds better if you love what you’re doing. Just be sure it’s something you’re good at, you can be paid for, and the world needs.

Step 2: Create the perfect blog name

Creating your blog’s name is where the fun starts.

You probably already have some ideas after picking your niche. But before you jump the gun, let me help you get even more amazing blog name ideas.

Brainstorm keywords

There are two types of names you can utilize for your blog: branded names and keyword-based names.

Both options are equally effective, and often bloggers opt for a combination of the two.

To begin with, a keyword-based blog name includes a target keyword or its variation, as the name implies. Consequently, it provides readers with an indication of what to anticipate in terms of content and product offerings.

This is why keyword-based blog names are also referred to as “descriptive” names.

Descriptive Blog Names

There are plenty of popular blogs that have a keyword-based name, like:

I don’t know about you, but coming up with a keyword-based blog name is much easier with a keyword list.

You can use a keyword research tool like the Keyword Magic Tool from Semrush. Simply plug in any keyword, hit enter, and let the tool do the rest.

SEMrush Keyword Magic Tool

Here’s another neat tool you can use to get keyword-based blog name ideas: Business Name Generator

All you have to do is enter a bunch of keywords that are relevant to your niche.

Business Name Generator

Within seconds, you’ll get a bunch of cool-sounding name ideas you can use in your blog.

Best of all, you can easily check if they are available to be registered as domains.

Business Name Generator Ideas

Not sure what domains are?

We’ll get to them later in this post.

Before we do, we need to talk about branded domain names.

Get creative with brandable words

Many guides suggest drawing inspiration from keywords for your blog name. While it’s a solid recommendation, it’s important to note that numerous blogs have successfully embraced entirely unique names.

Ever heard of these blogs?

Despite the absence of traditional keywords, these blog names have made a significant impact in their respective industries.

Building a standout blog requires a blend of creativity and dedication. There are also a few tricks you can employ to create a distinctive, branded blog name. One approach is to use your own name, a strategy that has proven successful for bloggers like Neil Patel and Camila Coelho.

Some bloggers inject a unique twist into their names, enhancing memorability.

For example, there’s Alex In Wanderla. All it takes is a touch of creativity and commitment to craft the best possible blog for your readers.

Alex and Wanderland

By skillfully playing with words, blogger Alexandra Baackes crafted a name that stands out, is easily memorable, and is also uniquely brandable. Despite lacking conventional keywords, the name subtly conveys the blog’s theme.

You can replicate this impact by blending your name with popular phrases, terms, or slang.

For instance, in the writing realm, “listicle” is a common term for articles centered around lists. If your name happens to be “Lynn,” consider these blog name ideas:

While it may seem challenging initially, a wealth of word ideas is at your disposal. A swift Google search can guide you to the resources you need.

Write a mission statement

When pondering a blog name, it’s beneficial to pose this question to yourself:

“What will I say if people inquire about the origin of my blog’s name?”

Will you mention that it was randomly generated using words from Google? Alternatively, do you want to provide a genuine and compelling reason behind your blog’s name?

If you lean towards the latter, consider composing a mission statement to give purpose and meaning to your blog’s name.

What is a Mission Statement

A mission statement not only imparts a sense of purpose to your blogging journey but also furnishes you with meaningful words that can be employed in naming your venture.

In crafting your mission statement, in addition to defining your niche, it’s crucial to clarify three additional elements:

  1. Your target audience – Who is your blog intended for?
  2. Your value proposition – What will your target audience gain from reading your blog?
  3. How to describe yourself – How would you prefer to be referred to?

Once you have these components, weave them together into a cohesive and authoritative paragraph. Here’s an example of a mission statement with all the pieces:

Mission Statement Example

Granted, that value proposition is far from perfect. But it’s definitely filled with meaningful words that can make your blog name more meaningful.

Below are some useful keywords you can pluck out from the example mission statement above:

  • Digital
  • Entrepreneur
  • Aspiring
  • Indian
  • Writers
  • Guides
  • Tutorials
  • SEO
  • Copywriting
  • Tips

With all the information we’ve gathered so far, here are a couple of blog name ideas:

If you’re still not entirely satisfied with your blog name idea, trust your instincts.

Don’t stress over it too much.

In the world of blogging, there’s no such thing as a flawless launch.

That’s why I urge you not to overanalyze the process of naming your blog.

For instance, I initially named my blog “”

I admit – it wasn’t the most captivating name. Some might even argue it was a bit clunky and awkward to say.

Thankfully, in the realm of blogging, mistakes are permissible.

Upon realizing this, I opted for a complete rebranding, resulting in the name “GetintonewBlogging.”

Sure, renaming a blog comes will cause some setbacks.

You may lose some rankings and break a handful of backlinks. However, you won’t encounter anything you can’t overcome with a little research and hard work.

See if it’s available

The next and final step in naming a blog is confirming its availability as a domain name.

Keep in mind that a blog’s domain doesn’t necessarily have to match its actual name. However, aligning them makes it easier for your audience to remember and enhances branding.

To check the availability of a domain, visit a registrar like NameCheap and enter your desired blog name.

NameCheap Domain Check

After clicking ‘Search,’ give NameCheap a few seconds to find available domains that match your blog name.

To see how it works, have a look at its domain suggestions for the name “Listicle Lynn Digital.”

NameCheap Domain Name Suggestions

If all goes well, there should be a couple of matching domains available using different TLDs or “Top-Level Domains.”

Don’t know what TLDs are?

Basically, these are the extensions you find at the end of domain names, like “.com,” “.net,” and “.org.”

Now, a lot of marketers believe that getting the “.com” domain is crucial if you want high search engine rankings. Unfortunately for them, Google’s very own John Mueller stated that all TLDs are treated the same.

John Mueller Quote

With all that out of the way, let’s move on to the next step in starting a blog in 2024.

Step 3: Register and host your domain

If you discover an available domain that aligns with your blog name, your next step is to register it.

You can accomplish this directly from NameCheap’s domain suggestions page. Simply click ‘Add to Cart’ and proceed through their checkout process.

NameCheap Add to Cart Button

Keep in mind that I’m not insisting on using NameCheap; you have the freedom to choose other registrars as long as you secure ownership of your desired domain.

The crucial consideration here is your web hosting solution.

I’ve compiled a comprehensive comparison of the best hosting services for bloggers. Take the time to read through it to understand their features, pros, and cons.

Once you identify a hosting provider that aligns with your preferences, setting up hosting for your domain should only take a few minutes.

Hosting your domain

For the sake of this guide, let’s say you chose Bluehost as your web hosting service provider.

To host your website with Bluehost, the first step is to choose the right hosting plan.

I recommend Bluehost for several reasons:

  1. Reliable, lifetime customer support – A dependable team of customer support representatives is crucial in a web hosting company. They play a vital role in addressing server-side issues such as downtimes and software failures.
  2. Easy to use – Bluehost maintains a clutter-free online interface, making it simple to locate the specific features and tools you need when managing your domains and websites.
  3. Excellent WordPress hosting options – Bluehost’s hosting packages for WordPress websites are exceptional. Despite the affordable pricing, you can access premium WordPress services like automatic installation and performance optimization.

To host your website with Bluehost, the initial step is to select the right hosting plan.

I recommend checking out either their “WordPress Hosting or “Managed WordPress” solution. Both are fine-tuned to the needs of aspiring bloggers.

Bluehost WordPress Hosting Plans

Suppose you’re interested in Bluehost’s unmanaged WordPress hosting solution.

On the pricing page, select the plan that aligns with your requirements and budget.

Considering your blog is new, there’s no need to invest in the most expensive web hosting plan at this stage. An entry-level web hosting solution should be sufficient to launch your blog successfully.

Bluehost Basic Hosting Plan

Realistically, your website won’t encounter heavy traffic during the initial months. Therefore, even the most affordable web hosting plan should be capable of meeting your blog’s requirements.

Moving forward, you’ll need to set up your domain.

If you’ve already registered your domain name with NameCheap, utilize the ‘I already have a domain’ panel. Alternatively, if you haven’t registered a domain yet, choose ‘Create a new domain,’ and input your desired domain name while selecting your preferred TLD.

Bluehost Domain Setup

Finally, you need to review and complete your order by filling in your details.

Some of the required basic information are your email address, location, and payment information.

Realistically, your website won’t experience heavy traffic in the initial months. Hence, even the most budget-friendly web hosting plan should suffice for your blog’s needs.

Next, you’ll need to set up your domain.

If you’ve already registered your domain name with NameCheap, use the ‘I already have a domain’ panel. Alternatively, if you haven’t registered a domain yet, select ‘Create a new domain,’ and enter your desired domain name while choosing your preferred TLD.

Bluehost Package Extras

Keep in mind that this process should be quite similar regardless of the web hosting service you use.

The only variations may involve the add-on services available with your hosting plan.

Once you complete your order, you should be able to log in to your Bluehost account and manage your domains.

Your next step is to install WordPress and begin customizing your blog.

Step 4: Installing WordPress

Fun fact: WordPress is unequivocally the most popular CMS (Content Management System) for bloggers.

It commands a whopping 39.5 percent share, powering all websites on the web.

Given its widespread use, most web hosting platforms, including Bluehost, provide an express WordPress installation tool. For instance, hosting companies like GoDaddy use Installatron to automate this task.

Installatron on GoDaddy

The installation steps, of course, depend on the tool you’ll use.

Fortunately, you don’t need to know anything about web development at all to install WordPress. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and your dashboard should be ready in no time.

Logging in to your WordPress dashboard

During the installation process, you’ll be prompted to create your WordPress administrator account.

You can use your credentials on the WordPress login page, accessible through a specific URL.

By default, you can reach the login page by adding “/wp-admin” to your domain.

For example, if your domain is “,” use the following URL to access the WordPress login page: “”

WordPress Admin URL

Pro tip: Adding a custom URL for your WordPress login page enhances security by providing an extra layer of defense against brute force attacks. You can configure this setting through your web hosting account, including using the WordPress installation tool.

When on the login page, enter the credentials for the administrator account you created earlier.

WordPress Login Page

Once you’re logged in, the initial view is your personal WordPress dashboard.

Congratulations – you are now officially a blogger with your very own website.

This is an example of what your WordPress dashboard might look like after a couple of months of blogging.

WordPress Dashboard

The dashboard serves as a central hub for quick updates on crucial matters. This encompasses plugin updates, “Site Health” alerts, recent comments, and news related to WordPress.

If you’re logging in for the first time, check the “Welcome to WordPress” section for the quickest way to kickstart your blog. I recommend clicking either ‘Customize Your Site’ or ‘change your theme completely’ as your initial step.

Welcome to WordPress

One of the reasons WordPress enjoys such popularity is the vast array of themes available.

Numerous themes cater to various needs, whether you’re running an online store, managing a personal blog, showcasing a food blog, creating a news website, or developing an agency website, and much more.

WordPress Theme Library

Feel free to explore any theme that captures your interest.

Many themes have premium versions with additional features and customization options. Before diving in, let me guide you through what experienced bloggers typically do on their first day with WordPress.

Step 5: Get a powerful page builder

Customizing your WordPress website is a straightforward process.

However, creating a completely unique website with custom pages presents a different challenge.

While basic elements such as fonts, colors, and logos can be easily modified through the built-in theme customizer, constructing stunning pages with custom elements like content cards, accordions, and comment forms requires the use of a page builder.

What are page builders?

In simple terms, page builders enable you to modify elements that the WordPress theme customizer cannot handle.

Using a drag-and-drop editor, you can construct custom pages from scratch, adjusting details such as padding and margins, among other aspects.

These customizations are applicable regardless of the theme you’ve selected for your blog. However, some themes are specifically designed with a particular page builder in mind.

Hello Theme Elementor

Premium page builders also include advanced customization options for buttons, headings, dividers, images – pretty much every page element that exists.

How to install a page builder?

Here’s the cool thing: you can install top-of-the-line page builders like Elementorfor free.

You can find them on the official WordPress plugin repository.

WordPress Plugins

To install page builders from your WordPress dashboard, select ‘Plugins’ then click ‘Add New.’

WordPress Add New Plugin Link

There, just use the search bar and enter the name of the specific page builder you want to use.

Suppose you want to install Elementor.

Just use “Elementor” as your search keyword and that’s it.

WordPress Plugin Search

You should be able to install and activate the plugin from there. Just click ‘Install Now’ and then click ‘Activate’ once the installation completes.

How to use page builders?

Many page builders offer a variety of pre-made elements that you can effortlessly incorporate into any existing page.

Take Elementor, for instance, which provides an extensive range of elements – from animated headlines to pre-designed author boxes.

All you need to do is envision what you want on your page, search for the appropriate elements, and drag them into place.

Elementor Elements

Elementor goes beyond by enabling you to fine-tune aspects of your website that are not accessible using the built-in customizer. You have the flexibility to edit margins between sections, adjust padding in content areas, customize your site’s footer, and more.

Additionally, you can alter the appearance of each page on mobile devices. Activating “Responsive Mode” and selecting the desired device for design allows you to customize precisely how your website appears to users on smartphones or tablets.

Elementor Responsive Mode

Selecting either ‘Tablet’ or ‘Mobile’ will immediately refresh the preview window to match the chosen device.

You can then use Elementor’s drag-and-drop editor to customize the appearance of your page as you see fit.

Elementor Mobile View

Should you pay for a page builder?

The free versions of WordPress page builders come with essential features, allowing you to construct landing pages from scratch, use a drag-and-drop interface, insert interactive elements, and more.

However, I recommend opting for a premium page builder for advantages such as:

  1. Future updates – Premium page builders regularly receive updates that enhance software stability and functionality, ensuring your website remains future-proof regardless of its niche and purpose.
  2. Customer support – Developers offer premium support to paying customers, providing practical tips and assistance in navigating issues such as bugs and troubleshooting.
  3. Premium templates – Page builders like Elementor provide hundreds of professionally-designed page and section templates to premium users. These templates are fully customizable, allowing them to serve as a foundation for your unique designs.
  4. Custom CSS – Advanced users can leverage custom CSS support to customize every fine detail of their website. Some page builders, like Elementor, include this feature in their “Pro” versions.
  5. Additional elements – Many page builders offer additional element blocks to paid users, ranging from form widgets to pricing tables.

It’s important to note that not all page builders are available on WordPress’s official library. Builders like Thrive Architect and Divi, for example, can only be downloaded from their respective websites.

Additionally, you can install almost any plugin using the same methods highlighted above. Simply use the search bar, click ‘Install,’ and then click ‘Activate’ when the option becomes available.

Step 6: Build your essential pages

After following the steps above, you should now have a professional-looking website, poised to impress your readers.

However, what you have at this point is just the framework of what could be a great blog.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to create the essential pages that every website requires.

I’m referring to your contact page, homepage, and “about” page.

Building your homepage

Many new bloggers rely on their theme for designing their homepage.

And why not?

If you’re using a premium page builder, you likely have access to numerous ready-to-use templates that can serve as inspiration for your homepage design.

Many new bloggers depend on their theme for designing their homepage.

If you’re using a premium page builder, you likely have access to numerous ready-to-use templates that can serve as inspiration for your homepage design.

Building your “Contact Us” page

Incorporating a Contact Us page on your blog not only facilitates communication for certain individuals but also demonstrates your willingness to engage with your audience.

This, in itself, has a positive impact on your blogging brand.

The good news is, you don’t need to be a web development expert to create a contact page. Tools like Elementor allow you to seamlessly integrate a functional contact form into any page with just a few clicks.

Moreover, you’re not limited to a contact page to encourage reader communication. The current version of the page builder even supports Facebook comments, encouraging more users to share their thoughts.

Elementor Comment Elements

If you’re not using a page builder, you can count on contact form plugins instead.

A popular option would be WPForms Lite – a free contact form plugin that integrates with third-party services like:

  • Mailchimp
  • GetResponse
  • PayPal
  • ActiveCampaign

Certainly, you can also utilize the built-in form builders of your preferred email marketing platform.

This is an excellent way to optimize your lead generation, segmentation, and nurturing processes. It also provides access to advanced analytics tools to assist you in making data-driven decisions.

Step 7: Plan your content strategy

Now that your website is live, it’s time to formulate a content strategy.

After all, a blog isn’t really a blog without valuable content.

Despite the seemingly straightforward nature of writing, producing blog content can be a lengthy and intricate process.

Allow me to break down the steps for you.

Find keywords

Keyword research is a crucial stage in content development.

Keep in mind, you might be the most skilled writer globally, but without a solid keyword strategy, it’s exceedingly difficult for your blog to attract organic traffic.

This is because keywords play a vital role in getting content to rank in search engine results.

For instance, I tailored this post to target the keyword “Grammarly discount.”

So, whenever someone searches for that keyword on Google, they can discover my post.

Grammarly Discount Ranking

In searching for target keywords, it’s essential to acquire a reliable keyword research tool.

My primary recommendation is the Keyword Magic Tool from Semrush.

It may be a bit on the pricey side, but it encompasses all the necessary features to establish competitiveness in your niche’s SEO landscape.

Moreover, you can rely on the free trial to provide you with several lucrative keyword ideas every day.

To utilize it, just sign up for a free trial account and select ‘Keyword Magic Tool’ from the “Keyword Research” sub-menu.

Keyword Magic Tool

On the main interface of the Keyword Magic Tool, simply input any broad keyword related to the topic you have in mind.

For instance, if you’re planning to write a guide on copywriting, you can begin with the straightforward keyword “copywriting.”

Keyword Magic Tool Interface

The Keyword Magic Tool will promptly provide you with a list of keyword suggestions that are pertinent to your query.

It also includes essential keyword metrics such as search volume, keyword difficulty, and Cost Per Click (CPC). These metrics are valuable in identifying profitable keyword opportunities that can contribute to the growth of a budding blog.

Keyword Magic Tool Results

In the event that you need better watchword ideas, you can make them more unambiguous by utilizing channels.

Since you’re intending to compose an aide, you can utilize the “Incorporate watchwords” channel to limit your catchphrase pool. Essentially click ‘Remember catchphrases’ and type for the watchwords connected with the point you need to expound on.

Simply make certain to choose ‘Any watchwords’ with the goal that the catchphrase ideas don’t need to actually take a look at every one of the crates.

Keyword Magic Tool Include Keywords Filter

It won’t take long before the Keyword Magic Tool refreshes the page with a more refined list of suggestions.

Start writing

Experienced bloggers strive to compile a list of target keyword ideas sufficient for an entire month’s worth of content.

With the list in hand, they establish an editorial calendar to enhance their productivity.

It typically takes a form similar to this:

I utilized the CoSchedule tool to construct that editorial calendar. If you’re not ready to invest in another paid tool just yet, feel free to use your computer’s built-in calendar app.
