"Hawaii Five-0" Actor and Former UFC Fighter Dies at 56

Taylor Wily, known for his memorable role as Kamekona Tupuola on "Hawaii Five-0" and "Magnum P.I.," has passed away at the age of 56.

The former sumo wrestler turned actor was confirmed dead by his friend and "Hawaii Five-0" producer, Peter M. Lenkov, who expressed his heartbreak on social media.

Lenkov shared his grief with The Associated Press and posted several tributes on Instagram, writing, "I am devastated. Heartbroken."

Honolulu's KITV 4 was the first to report Wily's death, though the cause remains unknown. TV and radio personality Lina Girl Langi, a friend of Wily’s, shared the sad news on "Island Life Live," expressing her sorrow.

Lenkov, who had a close personal and professional relationship with Wily, posted a video montage of their moments together, saying, "You charmed me into making you a regular… on the show… and in my life. You were family. And I will miss you every day, brother."

In a statement to the AP, Lenkov praised Wily's talents beyond his well-known comedic roles, noting his dramatic skills. Lenkov recalled writing a role specifically for Wily in a recent script, hoping to include him in future projects.

"I just wanted to keep him close… not just as a friend, but as an artist. Devastated I won’t get that opportunity," Lenkov said.

Wily's portrayal of Kamekona on "Hawaii Five-0" from 2010 to 2020 made him a fan favorite, a role he continued in the reboot of "Magnum P.I." He also had a notable appearance as a hotel worker in the 2008 comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

Before his acting career, Wily, born Teila Tuli, was a recognized sumo wrestler and a fighter in UFC 1. He made history as the first knockout victim in UFC when a kick from Gerard Gordeau knocked out his tooth and ended the fight after just 26 seconds.
