India got 1st under-river metro station

Kolkata Metro made history in April 2023 by running a train through a tunnel under the Hooghly River, a first in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the under-river metro tunnel on March 6, connecting Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.

The metro tunnel runs under the iconic Hooghly River, marking India's first underwater metro.

PM Modi will also inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat metro sections, focusing on improving urban mobility.

The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section is India's first transportation tunnel under any mighty river, with the Howrah metro station being the country's deepest.

This section is part of the East-West Metro corridor, covering a 4.8 km stretch between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade, linking the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.

The metro is expected to traverse a 520-meter stretch under the Hooghly River in just 45 seconds.

The East-West alignment includes a 16.6 km stretch, with 10.8 km being an underground corridor between Howrah Maidan and Phoolbagan, including the Hooghly River tunnel.

The metro operates on the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system, moving automatically from one station to the next with a long press of the 'ATO departure' button.

Kolkata Metro aims to commence commercial operations on the entire East-West alignment between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan by June-July.
