OpenAI Launches GPT-4o: What's New in ChatGPT?

OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o, an upgraded version of its GPT-4 model, which powers ChatGPT.

According to OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, this new version is significantly faster and enhances capabilities across text, vision, and audio.

The new GPT-4o model will be available for free to all users. However, paid users will still benefit from up to five times the capacity limits compared to free users.

Free or Paid?

OpenAI announced in a blog post that the features of GPT-4o will be rolled out gradually. The text and image capabilities will start to become available in ChatGPT immediately.

Feature Rollout:

This launch comes just before Google's I/O developer conference, where updates to its own AI model, Gemini, are anticipated.

Competition with Google:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted that GPT-4o is "natively multimodal," meaning it can handle and generate content in voice, text, and images.

Multimodal Capabilities:

The model can mimic human speech patterns and even detect people's moods.

The updated version of ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4o, is faster and can process and reason across text, audio, and video in real time.

Performance Enhancements:

GPT-4o will be accessible to all users, including those using the free version of ChatGPT, within the next few weeks.

Availability:

Gartner analyst Chirag Dekate noted that this update seems like OpenAI is trying to catch up with its competitors.

Expert Opinions:

He mentioned that many of the features showcased by OpenAI have been seen in more advanced forms in Google's Gemini 1.5 pro launch.

Despite OpenAI's initial advantage with ChatGPT and GPT-3, capability gaps are now emerging compared to competitors like Google.
