Doctors are offering tips to help you deal with pollen allergies this season

Pollen allergy, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, happens when your immune system reacts strongly to pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, or other plants. 

This reaction, which can lead to respiratory symptoms, tends to spike from February to March when pollen levels in the air are high, especially for those with a genetic predisposition to allergies.

Symptoms can include sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, throat irritation, and coughing. To manage pollen allergies, there are a few steps you can take. 

1. Stay indoors during peak pollen season.

2. Keep windows closed and use air filters.

3. Take prescribed allergy medications.

4. Use saline nasal rinses to clear nasal passages.

5. Wear a mask or bandana outdoors.

6. Avoid outdoor activities when pollen counts are high.

7. Shower and change clothes after being outdoors.

8. Keep pets clean to prevent them from tracking pollen inside.

Additionally, if allergies are severe, visiting a pulmonologist for an evaluation may be necessary.
